Wow, indeed. As I see it, the main problem with your proposal--aside from real technical issues--is that shots become too fluid, that changing something in your proposed hierarchy might have massive and unexpected ramifications in shots that you had already planned.
The main technical issue is that you can't simply "update" existing shots without re-rendering them so any change to your upper level hierarchy would, for all intents and purposes, have to be a percolation into existing shots, so you're not really saving any time nor really getting any new control.
While I can't discuss the details, we do have an alternate solution which I think you will really like, though it is still some ways off.
We really do appreciate your thoughts and the productive way in which they were presented.
