Here is an object I found on www.3dcafe.com. I did a little clean-up and imported it. I hope it is useful.

Here is the Readme from the Original Author:

Deinonychus

The Deinonyc.3DS is a high quality 3D Studio mesh created by Celso Meireles Alves.

The file Deinonyc.ZIP, that you can download at 3D Cafe (www.3dcafe.com) is a freeware. So, you can use it, with or without commercial intentions. But, you shoud put my name (Celso Meireles Alves) even without paying me anything.

You can sell or freely distribute this project, but I recommend you to copy
all the files of this project.

This is a Deinonychus (a dinosaur similar to the velociraptor) and the mesh was created based in the true skeleton, and all proportions are very close to the real animal (1 unit in 3D Studio is 1m in the real animal).

I can create high quality, full textured, read to be animated meshes at a
good price. If you want to hire my services, and have me to do a high quality mesh for you, send a e-mail with your proposals. My prices are really inexpensive and vary with the model’s complexity. In this case, I guarantee you will have full rights to this mesh, and I will not distribute it in any ways.

If you liked this mesh and have some questions or comments, you can always e-mail me.

Is there a plug in or something that can be used to convert the 3ds files to usable FF files?

No, you would need a modeler which supports importing of .3ds and exporting of .wrl files.. I believe Art of Illusion is capable of this, though I haven't tried it.

Alternatively you can try a conversion program but I'm not sure what is available on the Mac...

Thank you. And excuse my ignorance, but how do wrl files relate to the 3dxf files that FF uses?

There's a chapter on that in the manual starting on page 149, but the short version is the .wrl files are in VRML format which FrameForge can natively read and internally convert into true FrameForge 3D Objects including hinges and optional parts if set up according to our guidelines.

Very good. Thank you for the info. I'll check it out.
